advanced mosaic projects

if you took the intro to mosaics workshop, you might be ready for different kind of mosaic project.

cool!

if you enjoy working on the wood board used in the intro to mosaics workshop, go for it! increasing the detail or using color differently are two ways you can keep your experience fresh or challenge yourself.

below are some options for other projects.
if you decide to pursue one of them, let me know in the registration form. i will follow up with you about your project to make sure we have everything you need during class.

the options below are for folks who already took an intro workshop with me. if you’re signing-up for your first time, you’ll be creating a mosaic on an 8″ x 8″ wood art board.

sun catcher / glass-on-glass

choose translucent glass for color and texture.

create a free-hanging ornament or use a framed piece of glass to create artwork that’s a bit like stained glass. alternatively, use translucent glass on top of a mirror.

what makes this project more advanced?

you’ll need to pay attention to what your glass looks like with light shining through it and bouncing off of it, so it looks good in both settings. (unless your working on a mirror.)

also, the adhesive is more tricky to work with and should be applied in a certain way.

this project is more challenging than a stepping stone and less challenging than a layered project. working on a mirror is easier than working on clear glass.

stepping stone / outdoor mosaic

mosaics for outdoor decoration

mosaics on wood need to be kept indoors. wood expands and contracts with moisure and temperature and this spells ruin for the mosaic.

outdoor mosaics use different adhesives and different surfaces so it has a better tolerance for varying temperatures and getting wet. a concrete stepping stone is a great option!

what makes it more advanced?

using silicone as an adhesive. it’s messy and a little harder to control than the Weldbond we use on wood.
the object your mosaic-ing might be larger than our usual 8×8″ or be 3D.

a stepping stone or outdoor project is easier than a glass-on-glass project or a layered mosaic project.

a layered mosaic project

translucent glass over images and colors

the possibilities are endless!
paint, draw, or collage a surface, then, mosaic on top of it with transparent and translucent glass.
the surface still needs to be something that will support mosaic art, and images may require a clear coat before gluing the glass.

what makes this an advanced project?

project design requires advance planning.
possibility overload (overwhelmed by too many options!) can occur.

more distinct skills are needed, such as painting, drawing, or collaging.

this type of project is more challenging than stepping stones or sun catchers.
it requires a strong artistic concept before beginning.
