this is the real skull of a wild boar.
semi-precious stones adhered with epoxy-based modeling compound.
some stones are no larger than a grain of sand, all fitted and arranged meticulously by hand.

the resin coating protects these details and adds a glass-like sheen. the pearlescent luster is a result of powdered mica pigments.

aka “Edgar” for short

i have spent a lot of time with Edgar, and it feels as though we’re friends. i selected the crystals very carefully, especially the ones we used in his ‘dental work’. i hope who ever takes this work into a forever home will feel the same connection to the animal world and its sacredness as i do. i also hope Edgar’s medicinal energy is a blessing to all who encounter it.

2019 is the year of the Pig, so he was a timely project. Also coinciding with my enjoyment of Robert Graves’ “The White Goddess”. i’ve yet to finish the book, but the impression of the pig as a totem of the All-Mother will stay with me, as it did throughout my embellishment of this skull.

The skull itself is from a wild pig that was killed in the Savanah Preserve on Florida’s Treasure Coast. the populations of wild pig become destructive to native ecosystems and are frequently culled. Edgar did not perish of natural causes, though i don’t know by whose hand his death occurred. the skull was a gift, given to me by a friend from church.
